LONDON, 02 February 2012: Thesigers Associates Alex Strick van Linschoten and Felix Kuehn have published a new book on the relationship between the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, the result of six years of research and field work, including much of that time living in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
The book, An Enemy We Created: The Myth of the Taliban/Al Qaeda Merger in Afghanistan, 1970-2010, is published by C. Hurst & Co. Publishers in the United Kingdom and Pakistan. It made its debut in late January at a book launch held in the Dept. of War Studies, King's College London. Reviews in the Financial Times and Reuters described it as a 'sobering assessment' and 'compulsory reading', respectively; a third in the New York Review of Books noted its contribution to the growing literature on Afghanistan. The FT reviewer praised Kuehn and Strick van Linschoten for bringing 'the empathy and experience of old chroniclers such as Caroe but none of the romantic condescension towards the "wily Pathan”.' The UK book tour includes appearances at the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) on 15 February and at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, on 20 February. Anticipated release date for the US edition, to be published by Oxford University Press, is mid-2012.
